In two weeks time i shall begin my journey to a village in Tanzania called Iringa.
Iringa is one of Tanzania’s thirty administrative regions. The regional capital is Iringa. The former Iringa Region had a population of 1,495,333. The currently sized Iringa, the four old northern districts, had a combined population of 840,404. Iringa Region is home to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s second largest park, which has an abundance of wildlife and approximately 7,500 visitors per year. A second park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park in Iringa Rural District, is less visited.
I have no idea what to expect when i travel out to Africa, this will be my first experience of life out there and i am sure it will be quite the adventure. I have never experienced sleeping in a sleeping bag and camping out in mud huts and as nervous as i may be feeling now, i am sure once i am there it will be one of the best experiences.
Some of the work i can volunteer to get involved in are as follows:
General maintenance work – working within the school grounds, gardening, painting, basic repairs, plumbing and other general manual work. Now i have to admit the likes of plumbing or carpentry is not something i can claim to have any experience in, but what an opportunity to learn where it is most needed and can offer to be some resource.
Working with an orphanage – there are many orphanages located around Iringa and due to high HIV infection rate, 14% of the people are infected in comparison to the national rate of 7%, and to me that is pretty high and to be given the chance to help in everyday life, i will definitely be jumping at the chance of helping out with the cooking, cleaning and helping with homework to name but a few things. I also want to be able to walk in the steps of the girls who have to walk couple hours a day collecting water from the well, given the chance to help out and be as much helpful resource as i possibly can.
I am sure it will be another trip of a lifetime and i hope to be able to share my experience with you of life in Iringa Tanzania.
